history of Lewis funeral chapel

In 1908, while working for Butterworth Mortuary, Fred R. Lewis was sent to Bremerton to manage their branch location. Recognizing the community’s future, he purchased the business and, in 1912, built the Lewis Funeral Chapel on Fifth Street. His commitment to providing compassionate care led to continuous expansion.

His son, Lester M. Lewis, joined the business in 1922, followed by the acquisition of the Poulsbo Mortuary in 1924. In 1931, recognizing the need for a local cemetery, Fred financed his sons to establish Forest Lawn Cemetery and Crematory. After Fred’s passing in 1935, Lester and Paul Lewis partnered with George Cassity, further growing their services.

By 1955, expansion efforts led to the construction of the "Stone Chapel" in Poulsbo, completed in 1956. A decade later, the Bremerton facility relocated adjacent to Forest Lawn Cemetery. In 1970, Glen M. Henrickson joined the staff, later becoming General Manager. After Lester M. Lewis Jr.'s retirement, the Henrickson family acquired the business in 1992.

In response to growing needs, a new mortuary, cemetery, and crematory were established at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in 1997. Following Glen M. Henrickson’s passing in 2001, his son, Glen C. "Chris" Henrickson, assumed leadership. Today, the Henrickson family continues to uphold a tradition of dedicated, local, family-owned service.
