William E. "Bill" Hurlburt passed away after a brief illness on June 17, 2023, at 89 years old.
A long-time resident of Port Orchard, Washington, Bill was born December 22, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Art and Marie Hurlburt. He spent most of his youth in Dubuque, Iowa, fishing on the Mississippi and participating in athletics of every nature. Upon graduation from high school, Bill enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, making it a career, and retiring with 20 plus years in 1974. During his military time, he was married to Shirley Beau, of Dubuque, Iowa from whom he later parted ways. After retiring from the Air Force, Bill settled in Tacoma, Washington, eventually going to work for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a Radiological Control Technician. He had another full career there, retiring in 1996.
Bill lived a long, healthy life. While working at PSNS he met and married the love of his life, Sandy Gold. Together, they spent over 30 years at their home on Wye Lake. Bill loved camping, fishing, reading westerns, doing crosswords, and spending time with "the kids". He was a generous man who loved his dogs, playing cards, and watching sports. Bill was a great cook and a laid back, funny guy. He was thoughtful, reserved, and never spoke without thinking. His actions spoke for him. Bill was unfailingly kind, believed in everyone's potential, and helped many in need. He was a wealth of wisdom, you simply needed to ask.
Bill is survived by his wife Sandy, his daughters, and sons-in-law Kim and Taco Young, Anna and Josh Robbins, and Mary and Denny Brennan. He loved his girls and their families, and they loved him. He is also survived by his grandchildren CJ (Jennifer), Shane (Jennifer), Darien, Zephyr, Deryl-Rose, Tommy, and his namesake William, as well as 6 great-grandchildren. They were lucky to call him Poppa. Bill was one of ten children, and is also survived by several beloved siblings, Jack, Bob, Pat, Judy, Jerry, and Tammy, and many, many nieces, and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Terry, and siblings Art, Nancy, and Tom.
Bill has requested no formal services but would love everyone to go wet a line in his honor. He will be cremated, and ashes spread by the family. If you wish to make a remembrance in his honor, he particularly appreciated the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the Nature Conservancy for their efforts at making the world a better place. Our hearts are heavy, and we are feeling empty, but we were honored to be part of his life and will honor him by going on with joy in our lives.
Thanks, Bill. It was a great run. We're glad you are at peace.
