Verna Janice DeWitt

–

Bremerton, Washington

Verna J. DeWitt (Edd), 99 years, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on June 8, 2023. She was born on December 4, 1923, in Williston, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Peter and Minnie Edd (Hill). She was predeceased by her parents, 7 siblings-Emma, Ruth, Edna, Zell, Jess, Nyla and Betty, grandson-Timothy Goudie, granddaughter-Emily Goudie, her husband-Rev. John DeWitt, and her ex-husband-Ray Goudie.

Verna was the only one in her family to graduate from high school. She came to Seattle and worked at PSNS during WWII. After the war, she went to Edison Technical School taking secretarial classes. Coming from a 5 generation Great Northern/Northern Pacific Railroad family, she began working for the Northern Pacific Railroad, now Burlington Northern Railroad. She worked her way up from being a messenger to the Regional Vice President's Office. She retired from Burlington after 41 years, where she ended her career as the Supervisor of the N.W. Regional Vice President's File Office.

Verna is survived by her son, Gerald (Marsha) Goudie, daughter Verna Rae (Roger) Oraker, her grandchildren-Kimberlie (Kurt) Muschett, Amanda Goudie, Capt. Nathan Oraker, Capt. Stephen Oraker, Capt. Blythe (Joe) Blakistone, her 3 great grandchildren-Bianca Goudie, Wyatt and Tyler Blakistone, and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ballard, Washington. She was a Christian and was faithful in her walk with The Lord. Verna loved gardening, sewing, baking with her grandchildren and ceramics. She was one of the 6 Edd Girls. They were a group of loving, strong women who created a close-knit family. Mom was deeply loved by her family. She was a fun and loving grandmother!

A Celebration of Verna's Life will be held July 8, 2023, at Sylvan Pines Community Center in Bremerton, Washington. In January, the family will have a commitment service at Tahoma National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of Verna you can donate to SamaritansPurse.org.
