Steven Douglas Elliott
July 7, 1955 – October 10, 2026

Steven Douglas Elliott, 71, of Suquamish, Washington, passed away in the early morning hours of October 10, 2026. Known as Doug to many of his Michigan friends and as Steve to those who knew him later in life, he was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, brother, uncle, friend, and “Grandpa Steeeeeeeeve.”

Steve was born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 7, 1955, to John C. Elliott, a chiropractor from Canada, and Ivy Price, who came to the United States from England. He grew up with three older sisters—Pat, Nancy, and Sue—and the family home was in Dearborn, Michigan. He attended the Central Institute for the Deaf before returning home to be with his mother after his father died when Steve was 16. He later attended the school for the Deaf in Flint, Michigan, where he earned a degree in auto mechanics.

At 18, Steve moved to Los Angeles with one goal: to live on the beach—a plan that certainly gave his mother and three sisters fits. He soon found work with the California Gas Company and built a wide circle of Deaf friends, including his future first wife, Maril. His Los Angeles friends knew him as a laid-back, fun-seeking Steve from Detroit, who loved to tease and always lit up whenever the conversation turned to cars, boats, or motorcycles.

Steve and Maril married in 1980 and welcomed their first son, Michael, in 1982, followed by their second son, Nate, who is also Deaf, in 1985. In 1986, they moved their family to Bainbridge Island, Washington, to be closer to Maril’s family. Their daughter, Jenna, was born in 1988.

After moving to Bainbridge Island, Steve began working for the Seattle Water Department, now Seattle Public Utilities, first as a meter reader and later as a meter mechanic. He worked there for many years before retiring in 2016.

Steve met Bonnie in 2005, and they shared their lives in Suquamish for the next 21 years. They especially enjoyed riding motorcycles, spending time with their Deaf friends, and watching their family grow. Retirement gave Steve more time to love Bonnie, grow out his hair and beard again, ride motorcycles, and be a jovial grandfather.

To his grandchildren, “Grandpa Steeeeeeeeve” gave the very best hugs. They loved swimming with him and sitting on his Harley—simple moments that became treasured memories.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie; his children, Michael, Nate, and Jenna; his stepchildren, Jeremy, Josh, and Caitlin; his grandchildren, Damian, Hendrix, Tallulah, Felicity, Thad, Adela, and Conan Jr.; his sisters, Nancy and Sue; and his nieces and nephews, Johnny, Kimmy, Tyler, Megan, and Kristen. He was preceded in death by his father, John C. Elliott; his mother, Ivy Price; his oldest sister, Pat; and his stepson, Conan.

Thank you for your condolences and messages of love. A Celebration of Life will be held later this year so our community can come together to remember our beloved Doug, Steve, Dad, Uncle, and Grandpa. More information will be shared in time.
