Roy Vaughn Johnson

–

Poulsbo, Washington

Roy Vaughn Johnson passed away on January 20, 2013. Roy was born in 1922 and raised on a small farm in Knappa, Oregon with two older sisters. He grew up with both sets of grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins living close by. After high school, Roy moved to Bremerton, Washington where his sisters had relocated and began a 42 year career with Sears Roebuck and Company. During WWII, he took a leave from Sears to train as a medic in the army, proudly serving at Camp Pendleton until the end of the war.

After returning to Sears, he met his wife, Florence Cleveland, who was working in the accounting department. They married in 1947 and raised two children, Christine Johnson (Jay Gainer), and Brian Johnson (Kelli). In 1955, Roy and Florence began building the family home on Sundown Drive, living in the day-light basement for eight years while they completed the upstairs on weekends and vacations. In the 1980's, they built a second home in the Seabeck area on acreage next-door to their son and grandchildren. With their son's help, this became a one year project.

Roy was active in his church, Our Savior's Lutheran, and he loved being a greeter at Sunday services. After retiring, he served on several church committees and was a church representative on the board for Martha and Mary. He also served as a community representative on the Poulsbo Group Health board.

Roy enjoyed traveling with Florence in their motor home, gatherings with friends and family, bowling with his team, the holidays, and working in his shop. He was a loyal friend and worker, could split a cord of wood in record time, and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone who needed it. His was a life well lived.

Survivors include his children, his grandchildren, Lindsay (James), David (Melissa), and Kyle, as well as his great grandchildren, Ashley, Hannah, Nathen, and Connor, his brother-in-law Ron Cleveland (MaryAnne) and sister-in-law Bonnie Arno (Steve), nephews Michael, Randy, and Bernie Bidgood, and cousin Gary Browning (Linda Josephine).

Remembrances can be sent to Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Bremerton or to Group Health Hospice in Kitsap County.
