Nell R. Burr Obituary (1913

Nell R. Burr of Poulsbo, Washington, passed away on April 5, 2004 at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale, Washington. She was 91 years of age. She was born to Roe W. and Ila O. (Braden) Roach on February 26, 1913 in Fowlkes, Tennessee. She graduated from Hume High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She was participant in the Miss America Pageant in 1933 as Miss Memphis. She married Kenneth Raymond Burr on June 29, 1935 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death in 1968. She was employed as a dispatcher for the United States Navy during World War II. She managed University Beauty School in Seattle, Washington for several years and was also a pastry cook at the Boat Shed restaurant in Bremerton, Washington throughout her eighties. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Bremerton. She is survived by son Larry K. Burr and his wife, Jo of Brownsville, Washington; daughter Marilyn K. Gorman and her husband, Dale, of Brownsville; grandchildren Larry, Larry Paul, Mary Ann, Mark, Molly, Jennifer, and Elizabeth; and eleven great-grandchildren. Her brothers Ralph and Larry, and her sisters, Katherine and Christine, preceded her in death. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
