Melvin A. Sprout

–

Bremerton, Washington

Melvin Arthur Sprout, of Silverdale, WA, passed away on January 22nd, 2022, at St. Michael Medical Center. He was 72 years old.

Melvin was born on April 27th, 1949, to Harold and Margaret (Fiske) Sprout at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, WA. He was the fourth oldest of eight children, and spent his entire youth growing up in Seabeck, WA.

Melvin graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1967, where he was active in football, wrestling, and track. After high school, Melvin attended Olympic College in Bremerton. During this time, he worked for Boeing, as well as in construction and furniture delivery. He joined the Army in September 1969, serving his time honorably until April 1972. Following the military, Melvin returned to his schooling at Olympic College, while also working for Alpine Evergreen and in construction.

In 1973, Melvin became employed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He started out as a rigger helper, moving into a rigger mechanic position during 1977. In 1978, Melvin attended U.S. Naval School Diver Second Class in San Diego, CA. After successful completion of his training, he would continue to enjoy a long, fulfilling career in diving/rigging with PSNS, until his retirement in 2015. Melvin remained active following retirement, assisting others with moving, decluttering, and various home projects.

Melvin played baseball off-and-on throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He had a love for all sports, but was especially fond of football and baseball. The Seahawks and Mariners were two of his favorite teams to watch. Melvin also enjoyed playing card games, reading Tom Clancy novels, telling the greatest of stories, and delighting in good food and conversation with family and friends.

Melvin was greatly admired, not only for his strength and intellect, but for being a voice of reason even in the most trying of times. He was both humble and selfless, with a heart of pure gold. Melvin frequently placed the needs of others above his own, always willing to lend a helping hand, and never asked for anything in return. His loved ones miss him dearly, but it brings them great comfort knowing that Melvin professed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, just days before his passing.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret; brothers, Orin and Hugh; and nephews, Bradley Sprout and Shane Webster. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Anthony) Hoplock and Michelle Woodard; sisters, Margaret Topartzer, Lorraine Dressel, Donella Campbell, Rebecca Winters, and Beverly Webster; grandchildren, Nicholas, Sophia, Isaac, and Silas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service for Melvin, as well as his brother Hugh, will be held at Keyport Bible Church on Saturday, July 9th@ 2:00pm. All are welcome to attend.
