Matthew was born on January 23, 1955 to Robert Theodore Wurzbacher and Frances Bernadine (Marron) Wurzbacher. The third of four sons, he was born in Pensacola, Florida where his father, a U.S. Navy pilot, was stationed at the time. The Navy took the family far and wide; from Annapolis to Japan and everywhere in between. After graduating from Fairborn Baker High School (Ohio) in 1974, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and enlist in the Navy. He proudly served his country for 26 years before retiring in 2000 as a Senior Chief (MTCS(SS)), Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific. Notable among his many awards and accomplishments, he received the gold Strategic Deterrent Patrol Pin for completion of twenty patrol missions.
In his retirement, he enjoyed hiking, going on cruises (this time above water), volunteering with the Boy Scouts, and building model ships. He was an ardent fan of Seattle's sports teams, particularly the Seattle Kraken and the Seahawks. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, where he continued his steadfast service to the community and helped so many people. He was a devoted uncle and friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Frances, brother Robert Edward Wurzbacher, sister-in-law Joan Wurzbacher, and several uncles, aunts and cousins. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Wurzbacher of Pennsylvania and David Wurzbacher of Connecticut, sister-in-law Terry Wurzbacher of Virginia, and many nieces and nephews; Jennifer Wurzbacher (Bill Pietsch) of Virginia, Thomas Wurzbacher II (Jennifer) of Illinois, Eric Wurzbacher (Caitlyn) of Connecticut, Anne Wurzbacher of Connecticut, and Rebecca Foley (Ryan) of New Jersey. He is also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews; Mary Creekmore, Alana Wurzbacher, Matt Wurzbacher, Ben Wurzbacher, Emmalynn Wurzbacher, and Nyssa Foley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus (kofc.org) in his memory.
