Marjorie Glayd Garland, age 88, was born to Clarence Sydney and Lella Glayd Timanus on Jan. 9, 1927 in Kansas City, MO. She passed on to her Maker on Oct. 28, 2015 and is at peace.
Her childhood years during the Great Depression and adolescence through World War II made her living history when she shared memories of those years. She married Arthur Fagin in 1947. Together they raised 4 children beginning in Vallejo, CA to Bethseda, MD to Sitka, AK and mostly in Bremerton, WA. After 21 years she and Art divorced. She was briefly married to Guy Garland. Later she married Richard Tonkin and lived happily with him until his death in 2004.
During her lifetime Marge enjoyed rollerskating, camping, cruising, playing the piano and singing especially in the church choir and with the Sunshine Singers. She was a voracious reader and continued ongoing bible study. She went through the ups and downs of being a fan of U of O and Seahawk football and Mariner baseball. She took pride in her educational accomplishments including a B.A. from the University of Oregon (go Ducks) and then in midlife earned a Masters degree from the San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Marge inspired her family and others by being a life-long learner. She valued and was an advocate for women's education by being a member of AAUW and an active participant in her local chapter. She maintained her Omicron Pi sorority membership and was a long time member of Altrusa. She was a member of First Methodist Church in downtown Bremerton when her family first settled in town. She became a charter member of St. Luke's Methodist Church and had many happy years raising her family at home and in that church. Later she joined the congregation of Bremerton United Methodist Church. She was an enthusiastic contributor in time, energy and financial support to Seabeck Christian Conference Grounds. For 40 years she looked forward to and participated in the summertime Methodist family camp at Seabeck. She retired from her work life after many years with WA DSHS. She had fond memories of her workmates and was proud of her team's accomplishments. She gained satisfaction from seeing her children achieve success in their lives. For her family and friends who remain she will be in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
Marge is survived by her 4 children, Kalissa Fagin, Marcia Fagin, Barbara Short, Gary Fagin, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, friends and church family. A celebration of Marge's life will be held at Bremerton United Methodist Church at 1150 Marine Dr. on Nov. 15 at 2:30.
