James Smith

James Smith, aged 74, passed away on February 6th, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on December 23rd, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri to James and Maude Smith He was a lifelong athlete and coach who inspired countless young people to achieve their best on and off the field. James never wavered in his love or his commitment to his family and the community.

As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, James served his country with honor and integrity. After his military career, he became head custodian of the North Kitsap School District and as a football coach for Poulsbo Middle School. He coached the team during their historic championship run in 2015.

James dedicated his life to mentoring young athletes, teaching the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. He was a dedicated family man, a supportive friend, and a respected community leader. His passion for sports and his commitment to the community will never be forgotten. James’ gentle spirit and steady presence will be deeply missed.

James leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of almost 50 years, Karen, his children, James Earl, Jerrell and Jamaal, sisters Annie Mae Howard and Rolander Smith, brother David L. Smith and brother-in-law, Harold Whitaker, three beloved grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nephews and a host of family and friends. James’ legacy of service, humility, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.

James’ kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will never be forgotten. A funeral service will be held at Stone Chapel Poulsbo Mortuary on Wednesday, February 25th, at 12 PM. A celebration of life will be held at Sons of Norway on Wednesday, February 25th, in the private banquet hall from 3 PM to 6 PM.
