Howard Eldon Harris

–

Bremerton, Washington

Howard Eldon Harris, 92, of Bremerton was born in Harrison, Montana to Fred and Nellie Harris on a snowy January 11th, 1928. Surrounded by his loving family, Eldon entered his heavenly home on September 3rd, 2020. Eldon spent his early years on a farm in Montana. It was this farm upbringing which endowed him with a strong work ethic which he used to serve others all his life. He came to Bremerton at the end of World War II in 1946, meeting his beloved wife Dorothy at Bremerton High School. Eldon and Dorothy married in 1948 and went on to have five children: Randy Harris (Michelle), Diane Abbott, Jeannie Detweiler (Jay), Scott Harris (Pam), and Julie Guertin (David). Eldon started a career in the Electrical Shop (51) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) where he was known as "Red". He retired from the shipyard in 1983.

Eldon was a devoted husband and father. Together with his wife Dorothy of 72 years, he spent almost every single summer on Hood Canal at "The Cabin" entertaining family through a myriad of water and outdoor activities. He loved to share a joke or tell a story of his life on the farm in Montana. Eldon was a servant to all, a hard worker both in work and play.

Eldon was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He served faithfully for many years at First Presbyterian Church which later became Lincoln Avenue Bible Church as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and general repairman. He was a tireless helper always asking what he could do or how he could help. This was especially true with helping his family in many ways.

In later years Eldon and Dorothy enjoyed many road trips visiting their family in Alaska, Colorado, California, and Arizona. Sometimes the trips were short and sometimes long; there was even a cruise, trips to Branson, Hawaii, Montana and the East Coast tucked into the mix. Eldon was a big supporter of his grandchildren to whom he was known as "Papa". He was their enthusiastic supporter, showing up for concerts, recitals, games, special events, or other activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Homer Harris and Harold Harris, and sister Erma Robertson.

Eldon is survived by his wife Dorothy, his sister Thelma Kronenberg, his 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In memory of Howard Eldon Harris, donations may be made to samaritanspurse.org.
