Gertrude ''Trudy'' Gardner Pival Obituary (1916

Gertrude Gardner Pival passed peacefully following an extended illness on September 15, 2002. Born in Seattle on June 17, 1916, she will be missed as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, mentor and friend. Trudy's career as a musician began at Holy Rosary Grade School and West Seattle High School. After Graduation, she studied professionally at The St. Louis Conservatory School of Music in Missouri. An illness in her family prevented her from accepting an invitation to attend the Julliard School of Music. She elected instead to continue her studies at both the Cornish School of the Allied Arts and Seattle College (Seattle University),graduating with a degree in philosophy in 1939. She later took graduate courses in music at the University of Washington. She continued teaching piano and performing for seventy years, including volunteering as an organist and pianist at St. Anne's and Our Lady of Fatima parishes in Seattle and St. Cecilia's parish on Bainbridge Island. She taught piano for nine years at the Seattle campus of Convent of the Sacred Heart, Forest Ridge. Her greatest joy was nuturing piano students of all ages. Her husband of forty-nine years, Paul John Pival, D.D.S., preceeded her in death in June of 1990. Her six children survive: Paul J. Pival Jr. of Bainbridge Island, WA, Judith A. Wilson ( Mrs. Neal L.) Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Philip S. Pival, Mililani Town, HI, Mary Jane ( Mrs. Stuart N.) Walton, Bainbridge, Island, WA, Frank G. Pival, Kingston, WA, Mark J. Pival, Seattle, WA. She especially loved her ten granchildren, and her numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Affiliations include the Association of Catholic Childhood, The Seattle Ladies Musical Arts Society, Children of Mary Sodality and the Seattle University Alumni Association. Mass of the Christian Burial at 11:00AM, September 19, 2002 at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Bainbridge Island, WA. Private interment at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle, Washington. In lieu of flowers, Trudy requested rememberances to Catholic Charities, Seattle University Fine Arts Department, or Mustard Seed School c/o St. Cecilia's Parish Bainbridge Island. The family is most grateful for the loving care Trudy received at Harrison Memorial Hospital and Belmont Terrace Nursing Facility as well as the continual spiritual support by Holy Trinity and Star of the Sea parishes of Bremerton and her parish of St. Cecilia's.
