Tahuya, Washington
Gary Maurer, 78, peacefully passed away on February 23, 2026. Born and raised in Bremerton, Washington, son of Perl and Ida Mae Maurer and brother of Darlene Pendley. He was a devoted husband, best friend, and “Pal” to his wife, Helen, sharing 50 wonderful years. They built a life rooted in love, loyalty, laughter, and family. Together they raised five children—Lisa (Jerol), Chad, Christy, Jeremy (Jillian), and Dustin (Kelsey) —and welcomed eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Gary dedicated 38 years to civil service at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Keyport, where he was respected for his steady work ethic and commitment. Those values shaped his life at home, where being present, dependable, and supportive of his family mattered most.
Gary's youth was shaped by the time spent at his father’s dance hall, Perl’s, a well known local gathering place that reflected the strong roots he carried throughout his life. He loved teaching his family how to fish, shrimp, crab, and clam dig along the Hood Canal, Sekiu, and Westport. He looked forward to Fall hunting trips to Winthrop and adventures to Alexis Lake in Canada. He was happiest surrounded by nature with his loved ones.
During long weekends in Tahuya, Gary could often be found in the horseshoe pits, radio blasting, and was always up for cards or conversation. Family and friends meant everything to him. His legacy lives on in the generations he loved, mentored and led by example.
