Donna Claire Markwick (Saelens)
November 16, 1929 – July 6, 2025

Donna Claire Markwick (Saelens), age 95, passed peacefully in her home on the morning of July 6, 2025. Born on November 16, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—just two weeks before Black Tuesday—Donna’s life began amidst adversity, shaped early by strength, resilience, and a boundless determination that would define her nearly century-long journey.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don A. Markwick; her daughter, Diane G. Haynes; her son, Daniel E. Markwick; her parents, Agnes and Joseph Saelens; and her siblings, Charles and Alice Saelens.

She is survived by her children: Donald B. Markwick (Patti), Deborah F. Markwick, and David D. Markwick (Susan); three foster children: Jerry L. Molzahn, Joe Divine, and Tammy McCormack; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren—each a part of the legacy she leaves behind.

Donna’s childhood was marked by ingenuity and grit. Her family, seeking refuge from the financial strains of the Great Depression, moved from Milwaukee to West Allis, where they lived in a converted chicken coop before building their own home—nail by nail, board by board—using salvaged materials. It was in these early years that Donna learned the value of hard work, often helping her father on their small farm. His words, “You do good work, Donna,” stayed with her for life.

At just 14, Donna began working at a hospital, scrubbing bedpans and resharpening needles. Later, she joined the phone company, where she broke barriers by learning the electrical trade alongside men—paving the way for women in non-traditional roles long before it became commonplace.

At 18, Donna met the love of her life, Don Markwick, in a small tavern, her leopard-print patched red wool dress catching his eye. They married in 1948 and began their life together as a Navy family, raising five children while moving across the country and abroad, including to Hawaii, the Philippines, Illinois, and San Diego, before settling in Washington, where they purchased a 30-acre farm on what is now Silverdale Way, where Donna’s spirit for community truly took root.

Donna made history as the first Director of Housing for the local Housing Authority. A fierce advocate for equity and inclusion, she ensured families from all backgrounds had access to housing and opportunity. She spearheaded efforts to build affordable homes and train residents in construction—work that earned her a place on the national stage, where she met President Jimmy Carter. Her dedication helped transform countless lives and neighborhoods, leaving an indelible mark on her community.

Beyond her professional achievements, Donna was a nurturer of people, gardens, and dreams. She taught her grandchildren life lessons through gardening, crafts, and carpentry, always blending warmth with purpose. Whether it was a lovingly constructed Nativity scene or a moment of quiet guidance, her gifts came wrapped in patience, wit, and unconditional love.

Donna was a trailblazer, a builder, a mother, a mentor, and a matriarch. Her life was a living example of perseverance, compassion, and service.

On behalf of your family, your friends, your community, and every life you’ve touched—
You did good work, Donna.
