Poulsbo, Washington
David Vern Allen, known as Dave to family and friends and “Lightnin” within the Bainbridge Island softball community, passed away on October 10, 2026, at the age of 82.
Born on June 8, 1944, in Tacoma, Washington, Dave called Bainbridge Island his true home, but resided in Poulsbo since 1998. A member of the BHS graduating class of 1962, he remained close with several longtime friends and classmates throughout his life.
In 1965, Dave married the love of his life, Mary Horning. He worked as a beer and wine salesman for Jennings Corporation in Bremerton until 2002, when he retired early to care for Mary during her battle with cancer.
Dave loved gardening, classic cars, and softball. As a player and coach of the multigenerational R-Gang team, he shared his love of the game with family and friends. Mary was known as “Thunder,” so naturally, Dave became “Lightnin,” a nickname that stayed with him long after his coaching days.
In later years, Dave could be found cheering on his granddaughter Mary, at her softball and volleyball games. He also enjoyed conversations with his Google assistant, a pastime that brought plenty of smiles to his family.
Dave will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his brother, Les Allen (Shirley) daughter Amy Allen (Andrew Fredericksen); his son, Andrew Allen; his Granddaughters, Mary Allen, Andee Allen, & Lindsey Fredericksen, Grandson Andrew Fredericksen, and his cherished nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Patricia Allen; his beloved wife, Mary Allen; and his brother-in-law, Bill Horning, and Bill’s wife, Sue Horning.
His family takes comfort in knowing he is together again with Mary. They will miss his smile & laughter, his company, and the everyday moments they shared with him.
Please share your memories, stories, and photographs of Dave on his memorial page. Whether you knew him as Dad, Papa, Dave, Al, or Lightning, his family would love to hear how you remember him.
Family will begin receiving guests at the funeral home on Saturday, November 28, 2026 at 10am. A Celebration of life Memorial Service & reception will follow at 11am.
