It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Chester Roy Thomas Jr., known to his friends as Roy, who left us peacefully on April 22, 2026. Born February 10, 1952 to Louise Woods and Chester Roy Thomas Sr., Roy lived a life of 74 years defined by love, laughter, and an unyielding devotion to his family.
Born in Detroit and raised in Chicago, IL, Roy grew up with his mother, step-father Herbert Brown, four sisters, and three brothers.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Roy proudly served in the United States Navy, retiring honorably at the rank of E-6 after 20 years and 2 weeks of dedicated service. During his time in the Navy, Roy served aboard the USS Ranger, USS Midway, and USS Nimitz — and it was during these years of service that he met the love of his life, Virgilia. Together they built a wonderful life, raising their two treasured children, Via and Chester.
Roy believed in the potential in everyone and dedicated his life to coaching, mentoring, and educating members of his community.
He is survived by his beloved wife Virgilia; his two children, Via and Chester; grandchildren Preston and Trey; his daughter-in-law Kathleen, wife of Chester; and Via's partner, Miles. He is also survived by his sisters Shirley Thomas, Peggy Bullock, and Penelope "Penny" Brown; and his brothers Henry Brown and Stacey Brown. He is also lovingly survived by a wealth of family members spanning the Thomas, Brown, Woods, Robinson, and Yamilao families, whose lives were all touched by his warmth and generosity. He was preceded in death by his sister April Brown and his brother Stanley Brown.
