Charlotte S. Roe Obituary (1932

Charlotte Synneva (Straub) Roe was born June 6, 1932, in Eureka, South Dakota, and died July 17, 2021, in Silverdale, WA. She died surrounded by her family, reflecting her life of care and love. She was the first of four daughters born to Theodore and Margaret (Axness) Straub. Growing up in a small town and close with her sisters, she attended Eureka Public Schools (1950) and made lifelong friends. She then attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN earning her bachelor's degree. During her freshman year she met Edward David Roe and told friends that week he was the man she was to marry. They wed in 1954, began a lifelong partnership with his Lutheran ministry, and shared a wonderful 62-year union until his death in 2016. They lived in Columbus, OH; Baker, Mt; Seattle, WA; Gig Harbor, WA; and Silverdale, WA; and after Edward's death she lived in Shoreline, WA. They were blessed with six children and fourteen grandchildren: Susan Roe Ramsey (Bruce Ramsey: Synneva, Elin, Henry, Edward), Mary Roe Minor (Ralph Minor: Paul, Charlotte), Kaaren Margaret Roe (Mark Hicks: Laurel, Kevin), Ann Roe Kingston, Theodore Edwin Roe (Margaret, Fergus, Elli), Paul Edward Roe (Heidi nee' Metz: Eric, Matthew, Annika). Charlotte brought a caring heart, beauty and creativity to her life, family, and community. A lifetime musician, she sang in numerous choirs, loved opera, and raised a household of musicians, often accompanying them on piano. An amazing cook, she created delicious meals for daily family meals, was renowned for her pies, and passed along a well-loved cookbook with both adventurous and traditional German-Russian and Norwegian dishes. She was an amazing seamstress, sewing stylish ensembles and her growing family's clothes. She created a gracious home filled with art (some she painted) and gardens abundant with birds and flowers (specializing in roses) shared as beautiful bouquets. She was a voracious reader and modeled lifelong curiosity. She brought warmth, intelligence, and commitment to her church and community activities. She is survived by her children, sisters Marie McMahon and Kathryn Knops, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, who all have stories of her caring and beautiful life she shared. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Roe and sister, Margaret Wolf. In remembrance of Charlotte's life, family suggests charitable donations be made to Lutheran World Relief, the Audubon Society, or your favorite charity. A memorial for Charlotte will be held at a future date.
