Anne Goodyear Ackenhusen
October 14, 1928, to July 4, 2024

Anne Franklin Goodyear Ackenhusen died peacefully on Independence Day, 2024, having lived to 95-1/2 years of age (as she was proud to announce). She was born in Hastings, Michigan, on October 14, 1928, to George Edward and Anne Franklin Goodyear (Thomas).

Anne led a rich and fulfilling life marked by love for her family, a strong will, and a spirit of adventure. A proud alumna of the University of Michigan, Anne graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in economics. It was there she met her beloved husband, John William Ackenhusen, with whom she shared a remarkable journey. Together, they raised four children in South Charleston, West Virginia.

Throughout her life, Anne exhibited a real passion for both Michigan football and her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She and John traveled to Ann Arbor frequently to watch games and she always stood when the Michigan Marching Band took the field. Some of Anne's fondest memories were of traveling to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl, as well as seeing her team win two national football championships. Anne also never missed the Alpha Chi National Convention and beamed with pride upon receiving her 50-year pin. Throughout her adult life, Anne embraced feminist beliefs before it was common to do so. This influenced her ambitions and actions, as well as those of her children.

Anne's professional life was as vibrant as her personal one. She served as the business manager for the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council, where her leadership and commitment left a lasting impact. Later, she channeled her sharp mind and financial acumen into establishing her own tax preparation business, Many Happy Returns, after working as a tax professional at H&R Block for many years. She was very proud of achieving the IRS certification of enrolled agent, as well as earning an MBA long after her children were grown.

Anne and her husband John were avid bridge players, finding joy in the strategy and camaraderie of the game. Trips in their RV, Broadway musicals and international travel to Europe and Australia fueled their zest for life, allowing them to explore new cultures and experiences. They moved to Silverdale, Washington twenty years ago to join family and continue their enjoyment of life. In her later years, Anne embraced the simple pleasures of a long soak in a hot tub, water aerobics, and cherished time with her family.

Anne's legacy is one of achievement, resilience, and an enduring spirit. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by her son, John G. Ackenhusen (Ruthie) of Poulsbo, WA; daughter, Anne F. Ackenhusen (Michael Johns) of Bainbridge Island, WA; daughter, Mary Ackenhusen (Daniel Muzyka) of Salt Spring Island, BC; and son, Thomas Ackenhusen (Heather) of Ammon, ID. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Anne F. Gibbs, Michaela Johns, Katherine and Jonathan Muzyka, Sarah and Jacob Ackenhusen; and two great-granddaughters: Lindy and Nina Gibbs.

Services for Anne will be held at The Stone Chapel, 22272 Foss Road NE, Poulsbo, Washington on Friday, July 12 at 2 p.m. This will be followed by a 4 p.m. Happy Hour Farewell at The Barn in the Country Meadows retirement community, 12169 Country Meadows Lane NW, Silverdale. All are welcome!

As an alternate to flowers (which Anne loved), donations are appreciated to the Riverside Cemetery at https://www.barrycf.org/funds/riverside-cemetery-fund/. This is the community cemetery in Hastings, Michigan where Anne, her immediate family, and her ancestors are buried.
