Phyllis Eva (Carlson) Maurer Obituary (1918

Phyllis Eva (Carlson) Maurer of Poulsbo, died June 26, 2015 in Bremerton. Phyllis was the granddaughter of the second white settler on (Dog Fish) Liberty Bay. Phyllis was born July 11, 1918 in Pearson to Nels and Jenny (Hagstrom) Carlson. The family lived in Pearson on her grandfather's homestead. Phyllis was raised and educated in the Pearson and Poulsbo schools graduating from North Kitsap in 1936. Phyllis met Ed at Perl's Pavilion, a well known dance hall at the time, in Bremerton where he was a trumpet player in Perl's band. They were married in 1937 and lived across the street from the dance hall. During those early years Phyllis worked at Woolworth's on Pacific Avenue. Five years later Phyllis became a homemaker when they moved to a farm on Virginia Point/Pearson area. This is where she raised five kids and was an ideal Nanny for several grandchildren. Occasionally on a Saturday evening Phyllis would work at Perl's Pavilion and after Ed's death she worked at Healthways (healthfood store) on Callow in Bremerton. Phyllis enjoyed spending time with her family and gardening at the farm. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Phyllis during her nearly 97 years. Among them were to let yourself laugh hysterically until you cry and allow the pure beauty of genuine kindness to prevail during even the most difficult times. Everyone liked and loved Phyllis, she will be greatly missed. Preceding her in death was her husband Ed and brother Gerald Carlson. Phyllis is survived by her children Kaaren (Pete) Clayton of Sequim, Mike (Maria) Maurer of Port Orchard, George (Sheri) Maurer of Poulsbo, Kris (Lloyd) Potter of Sandpoint ID, Jill (Paul) McNeil of Port Gamble. There are 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Graveside services will be held on July 23, 2015 at 2 pm at Mountain View Cemetery in Poulsbo, WA.
